Registration Chair for Festival of Learning 2026 in Seoul

AIED, EDM, and ACM Learning @ Scale met as a single federated conference for the first time in twenty years, hosted in Seoul from 27 June to 3 July. Dr. Shin served as Registration Chair, merging three separate registration systems into one and coordinating everything from visa letters to on-site attendance. She was the only member of the leadership team with a background in education rather than computer science — a position she used deliberately, to keep educational questions in the room while the technical agenda moved.

June 2026 Students

Undergraduate capstone project accepted to the AIED 2026 main track

A project that began in the undergraduate course Understanding Big Data and Its Educational Applications (Capstone Design) was accepted as a main-track paper at AIED 2026 — a venue where main-track acceptance is difficult for doctoral students at well-known universities, let alone undergraduates. Buwon Hong, Eun Shim, and Heesoo Ko are the lead authors of “I’m not Stuck – I’m Learning: Operationalizing Self-efficacy Trajectories in Large-Scale AI Learning Environments.” A second team from the same course presented at an international conference in July.

2026 Appointment

Appointed to the OECD PISA Technical Advisory Group

Dr. Shin is the first Korean researcher appointed to the Technical Advisory Group for PISA, the OECD's international student assessment, and is currently its only member from Asia. The group of roughly eight to ten researchers advises on the technical standards behind the assessment. Having spent seven years at ETS on the delivery side of PISA, she now sits on the side that reviews it — and has made the representation of non-alphabetic writing systems, Korean among them, an explicit part of her remit.

2026 Program

Chairing Sogang's new AI Behavioral Studies graduate program

The interdisciplinary program grew out of a cross-departmental research group at Sogang and admitted its first cohort in 2026. It runs on four tracks — psychology, education, media communication, and technology management — and starts from a premise that inverts the usual framing: rather than treating AI as an engineering artefact, it asks how AI reshapes human behavior and how people evolve alongside it. Dr. Shin chairs the program.

Extended 2PL model for continuous and sparse polytomous responses published in Psychometrika

With lab fellow Seewoo Li, an extension of the two-parameter logistic model that handles continuous responses and sparse polytomous responses within a single framework — the kind of data that digital assessment produces routinely and that classical item response models handle badly.

Two papers at the BEA workshop on NLP for educational applications

STAIR-AIG, with Euigyum Kim, Seewoo Li, and Salah Khalil, sets out a human–AI collaboration workflow for generating critical-thinking items; Down the Cascades of Omethi, with Fabian Zehner and colleagues, presents a hierarchical approach to automatic scoring in large-scale assessments.

Four chapters in the Springer volume on digital-based international assessments

Innovative Digital-Based International Large-Scale Assessments (Khorramdel, von Davier & Yamamoto, eds.) collects the methodological work behind recent PISA cycles. Dr. Shin is an author on four of its chapters, covering timing data in population modeling, machine-supported coding of constructed responses, scoring of innovative domains, and multistage adaptive test designs.

Third patent filed on automatic item generation

“Electronic device and operating method for the optimized use of automatic item generation technology” (application 10-2025-0036007), filed with M.A. student Euigyum Kim. It follows two 2024 filings with Seewoo Li and Yeonwho Kim on prompt-based item generation and on correcting accuracy-rate bias in adaptively collected data.
